Introduction
This course of lessons introduced the notions of exponents and roots, and the related topics in logarithms. All of these topics are closely related and mathematically they are connected.
The notation of exponents is an essential part of further mathematics, and exponents are used in almost every branch of mathematics such as algebra, functions, trigonometry, analytical geometry, measurement, and data management.
A knowledge of exponents is one of the important bridges between
There is some important background information which is required before you can commence a study in exponents, and these are indicated in the first few lessons.
The Structure of this Course
This course is structured into the following sections:
- Revision : the background information needed
- Exponents : introducing the notations of exponents and the basic laws
- Roots : the notation of radicals, and how to notate and manipulate square roots and cube roots
- Surds : manipulating roots
Exponents are essentially a notation to express repeated multiplication.
For example, the multiplication 4x4x4 is more easily written as .
The Outcomes of this Course
There are two primary outcomes, being firstly the ability to solve typical problems involving exponents, roots, and logarithms; and secondly, the ability to use these mathematical notations and representations within other areas of mathematics.
